Ponte romano-medieval de Ponte de Lima

A ponte romano-medieval de Ponte de Lima, ex-libris da vila, atravessa o rio Lima e é um testemunho da história local. Originalmente parte da Via XIX romana, construída no século I d.C. para ligar Braga a Astorga, dela restam cinco arcos, visíveis a partir do arco principal em leito seco. A estrutura foi complementada, a partir do século XIV, por um extenso troço medieval que se estende da margem esquerda até à Igreja de Santo António da Torre Velha, integrando-se nas fortificações da vila. Documentos do reinado de D. Dinis sugerem uma ponte preexistente, possivelmente de madeira, mas a ponte medieval, tal como a conhecemos, já existia em 1504, quando D. Manuel I ordenou o seu calcetamento e a substituição dos merlões defensivos por elementos decorativos. A base da Torre Velha, parte do antigo sistema defensivo medieval, pode ser observada junto à ponte.

Ponte de Lima's Roman-Medieval bridge, the town's ex-libris, crosses the River Lima and is a testimony to local history. Originally part of the Roman Via XIX, built in the 1st century AD to connect Braga to Astorga, it still has five arches, visible from the main arch in dry bedrock. The structure was complemented, from the 14th century onwards, by an extensive medieval section that stretches from the left bank to the Church of Santo António da Torre Velha, forming part of the town's fortifications. Documents from the reign of King Dinis suggest a pre-existing bridge, possibly made of wood, but the medieval bridge as we know it already existed in 1504, when King Manuel I ordered it to be paved and the defensive merlons replaced with decorative elements. The base of the Old Tower, part of the old medieval defensive system, can be seen next to the bridge.
